In Murcia, Cartagena city is second largest. It is a very important port in Spain where a lot of commercial activities take place. A naval base, the largest in the Mediterranean coast of Spain, is located in Cartagena.

The name Cartagena clearly tells us who the founders of the area were. The Cartagians were the founders back in the 3rd century. Before them, the Mastia used to inhabit the land. Another thing worth seeing while in the region is Castillo de la Concepcion, a fortress built in the 13th century. The neoclassical churches, Santa Maria de Garcia, Santo Domingo and Iglesia Del Carmen, are also worth a visit. Iglesia de la Caridad is a church where an important collection of Italian Baroque and Spanish paintings can be found.

In the 20th century, a lot of buildings were erected. These are a little more modern and some are very outstanding that you will surely appreciate viewing them. Some of the buildings to look out for are Gran hotel, Palacio Consistorical which is the city hall as well as Palacio de Aguirre which is used as a modern arts museum. All these are perfect places to visit. There are no beaches in Cartagena but you sure will find La Manga Del Mar Menor a thrill which is on some kilometers away.

Another area in Murcia that is worth visiting is Costa Calida. Its coastline stretches for 250 kilometers. The name of this place means warm coast as the temperatures at Costa Calida are some 5o degrees more than other Mediterranean regions. This makes the area all the more perfect for beach holidays.

Costa Calida is the perfect place to enjoy water sports. Some include diving, water ski, sailing and wind surfing. The beaches are also spacious while some areas have some steep coasts and small bays.
