The currency of Spain is the euro abbreviated as EUR, or €. This is because Spain is a member of the EU together with some other 23 European countries. There are however other countries that use the euro without being members of the EU. They include Vatican, San Marino, Montenegro, Monaco, Kosovo as well as Andorra. These countries do not have any say in the affairs of the EU and aren’t members either.

A euro is well divided to some 100 cents. All euro members are responsible of issuing coins hat are unique in their own sense. All bills look the same as does the reverse of the coins. The euro zone therefore is an area with the same currency acceptable in all other countries that use the euro. Coins are also acceptable even if the obverse is not similar. The euro is therefore a legal tender in all the areas.

The earlier currency that was used in Spain was the peseta. It was replaced in the year 2002. Some people use the old currency and then are able to convert into Euros later on. The reason for this is probably because the peseta is still available in the region. The peseta also has many nicknames.

You should know that the €500 notes are not readily accepted in many Spanish stores. Please try a smaller denomination. It is always a wise alternative. It is easy to change currency to smaller denominations and you should actually opt for this when making your change into Euros.

You should take care of changing your own currency as many people will not accept currency other than Euros. You may be able to enjoy exceptions at airports and restaurants. US dollars may be acceptable at some places but the exchange rate may not be that fair.

If you have to exchange money, it would be advisable to do it at the bank. If you have an account with the said bank, you will be in a better position.
